International Heartsaver First Aid Course at the National Institute of Astrophysics

On Monday, July 21, the National Institute of Astrophysics will host an internationally recognized first aid training course in English—the Heartsaver Course—at its Rome facility. Organized by the American Heart Association International Training Center “Squicciarini Rescue,” this course offers both basic life support and first aid training, culminating in the issuance of an international certification accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA).

This initiative marks the beginning of a strategic collaboration with the Institute for Space Astrophysics and Planetology (IAPS), which operates within the Italian National Research Council (CNR). The course was developed specifically to meet the needs of international doctoral students and researchers preparing to travel to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, located in the remote Garafía region on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. Due to the site’s isolation and limited access to emergency services, possession of a valid international first aid certificate is mandatory.

The observatory, operated by the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics, plays a crucial role in astronomical research. Given the international nature of the scientific teams and the location’s remoteness, equipping personnel with life-saving skills is not just recommended but essential.

The course will be delivered by physicians, nurses, and instructors accredited by the 118 regional health system. It includes hands-on training using advanced QCPR digital mannequins, which are connected to innovative monitoring systems. These devices provide real-time feedback, track learner performance, and ensure a high standard of instruction.

“Squicciarini Rescue” is one of the few centers in Italy authorized to deliver AHA certifications in English and Spanish, making it uniquely suited for training international scientific staff. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an internationally valid AHA Heartsaver certificate—recognized across both medical and non-medical sectors.

AUTHOR.

Marco SQUICCIARINI, born in 1962, is a physician who has been disseminating life-saving maneuvers in Italy and abroad for more than 23 years. He is the head of a network of about 600 American Heart Association BLSD Instructors doctors and nurses, appointed in 2023 as a medical expert at the Prime Minister’s Office for the entrustment of the Cardioprotection service, and since 2020 he has been BLSD Training Activities Coordinator at the Ministry of Health. In 2004 he founded the first website (https://manovredisostruzionepediatriche.com) that teaches how to protect a child in case of choking with teaching materials approved by the National Institute of Health and usable by everyone. For several years, he has integrated Corporate First Aid with BLSD to expand the number of people who can protect the value of life, through Safe&Security projects combined with Welfare and Sustainability.
