Rescue Across Languages: AHA Multilingual Training Supporting the UN’s WFP Mission with Squicciarini Rescue International Center

Since 2022, our International Training Centre of the American Heart Association ‘Squicciarini Rescue’ has been training and certifying the international employees of the United Nations – World Food Programme to the great satisfaction of everyone both in the Rome office and in several around the world. Dr. Giulia Gitti, as project contact person within the WFP, created a project through which we have been included as a certifying body for international staff of the United Nations since 2022 without interruption.

In Italy, we have trained over 250 people at the WFP headquarters in Via Cesare Giulio Viola, and abroad, through Dr Gitti in offices around the world, as many as 400 people: to all of them the issue of the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support and defibrillation Heartsaver certificate, with international validity.

This certificate was also issued with the Italian ARES118 certificate, so everyone got both Italian and foreign certification.

The extraordinariness of this event is not only that we have trained people who continually tour the WFP offices around the world helping to fight hunger in many countries in difficulty, but that with our training centre ‘ ITC-AHA Squicciarini Rescue ’ we have been able to deliver all the courses in English, with doctors and nurses who are native speakers or have a high knowledge of English.

Being an AHA International Training Centre is also this: teaching with a didactics that was born in 1915 in Dallas, not only in your own country, not only in other countries but in different languages and with innovative didactics, through the projection of real-life scenarios and not with old and obsolete slides.

The importance of multilingual life-saving training for World Food Programme employees

In the operational contexts of the World Food Programme (WFP), often characterised by remote, unstable environments or lack of immediate medical support, it is essential that staff are prepared to deal with medical emergencies quickly and effectively. Teaching life-saving manoeuvres according to the American Heart Association (AHA) methodology is a structured, scientifically up-to-date and internationally recognised approach.

Training employees in techniques such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automatic external defibrillator (AED) use, and airway obstruction management can save lives in the crucial minutes before help arrives. Offering these courses in multiple languages, particularly English and Spanish, ensures accessibility and understanding for a multicultural workforce such as the United Nations.

AHA training not only provides practical skills, but also reinforces a culture of prevention, mutual support and operational readiness, in line with WFP’s humanitarian and solidarity values. In addition, these courses improve the general safety of the working environment and increase trust between colleagues during field missions.

WFP IN ROME

To all of our instructors who have participated, the WFP has issued a BLSD Instructor Health Certificate working with the United Nations in the WFP programme that saw the light of day many years ago (United Nations General Assemby resolution on 24 November 1961 officially establishes WFP), and which continues to address world hunger and assistance in countries at war or with conflict.

AUTHOR.

Marco SQUICCIARINI, born in 1962, is a physician who has been disseminating life-saving maneuvers in Italy and abroad for more than 23 years. He is the head of a network of about 600 American Heart Association BLSD Instructors doctors and nurses, appointed in 2023 as a medical expert at the Prime Minister’s Office for the entrustment of the Cardioprotection service, and since 2020 he has been BLSD Training Activities Coordinator at the Ministry of Health. In 2004 he founded the first website (https://manovredisostruzionepediatriche.com) that teaches how to protect a child in case of choking with teaching materials approved by the National Institute of Health and usable by everyone. For several years, he has integrated Corporate First Aid with BLSD to expand the number of people who can protect the value of life, through Safe&Security projects combined with Welfare and Sustainability.
